How to Paraphrase Without Plagiarizing
Learn how to restate a source in your own structure while keeping the citation and meaning accurate.
Paraphrasing is more than swapping words
A strong paraphrase communicates the source idea through your own sentence structure, emphasis, and vocabulary. Replacing a few nouns or changing the word order while keeping the original structure is still too close to the source.
A practical method
Read the passage until you understand the idea. Put the source aside and write the point from memory. Compare your draft with the original, correct any change in meaning, and add a citation. Keep a quotation when the original wording is especially precise or important.
When a citation is still required
Paraphrased ideas still belong to the source, even when no words are copied. Cite the source whenever its argument, finding, interpretation, or distinctive structure informs your writing.
A rewriting or humanization tool does not automatically remove plagiarism. Attribution and your own critical thinking remain necessary.
