Plagiarism vs AI Detection: What's the Difference?
Plagiarism detection and AI detection answer different questions. Learn what each analysis can and cannot tell you.
Two different analyses
Plagiarism detection looks for similarities between a document and existing sources. It can identify matching wording or passages that deserve source review.
AI detection estimates whether the writing contains patterns associated with AI-generated text. It does not search for a copied source and cannot establish plagiarism by itself.
Why the distinction matters
A document can contain copied material without looking AI-generated, and it can contain original writing that an AI detector flags as likely generated. The results should therefore be interpreted separately and in context.
Use both results responsibly
Use source matches to check attribution and citations. Use AI signals to identify passages for a conversation about drafts, writing process, and authorship. Neither result should replace human review or be treated as automatic proof of misconduct.
